What Aspiring Models Should Know Before Entering the Industry

Emy B, full-time model & Dubai kid, tells it like it is.

I never planned to step into modeling—it wasn’t part of my life plan at all. I was studying law, working nights, and just trying to manage everything at once when an unexpected opportunity introduced me to this industry. What started as a simple yes to a small shoot slowly opened doors I never imagined. Over time, I realized modeling is not what it looks like from the outside—it’s a world built on patience, rejection, discipline, and how you carry yourself in every situation.

1. How Modeling Journey Started Unexpectedly

I never actually saw myself becoming a model. At that time, my life was fully focused on studying law at university while working night shifts to support myself—covering my studies, managing expenses, and just trying to keep everything going. Modeling or anything related to fashion was never part of my plan, or even something I imagined for my future.

One day at my workplace, a girl approached me and asked if I would model for her makeup school project. She was a student and needed someone for a practice shoot. Honestly, I thought she was joking. I still said “yes, why not,” without taking it too seriously. That one small decision completely changed everything for me.

It turned out to be my first ever photoshoot. After that, the photographer posted my pictures on social media, and things slowly started to build from there. More people began reaching out for shoots, and eventually, I was discovered by an agency through my online presence. That is really how my journey in modeling began—very naturally, without any planning.

2. The Reality Check Every New Model Faces

When I entered the industry, one of the biggest reality checks I experienced was rejection and very quickly I understood that modeling is not about being accepted everywhere you go, in fact it’s quite the opposite. You will hear “no” far more often than “yes,” and there are times you may go through multiple castings without being selected at all. At first, it can feel personal, but with time I realized it has nothing to do with your worth and everything to do with whether you fit a specific brief.

Every client has a different vision, every project demands a different energy, and once you truly understand that, rejection stops feeling like failure and instead becomes a natural part of your growth in the industry.

3. Skills Alone Are Not Enough in Modeling

When people think about modeling, they often assume it is only about posing or looking good in front of the camera. While posing and expressions are definitely important, they are just the basic requirements in a professional environment. What I learned very early is that every serious model is expected to have these skills already. What truly makes you stand out is not just your ability to pose, but your behavior and professionalism.

Being respectful, consistent, and easy to work with matters a lot. Clients remember how you behave on set more than anything else. If you are reliable, polite, and maintain a positive attitude, you naturally become someone they want to book again.

4. Challenges I Faced as a Beginner Model

One of my biggest challenges in the beginning was figuring out who to trust. The modeling industry can be exciting, but also confusing for beginners. You meet many different people, and not everyone has professional intentions.

I had to learn how important it is to be in safe and professional environments. Working with the right photographers, agencies, and clients makes a huge difference in your experience and growth.

Another challenge was dealing with rejection emotionally. Even when you understand it logically, it still takes time to build confidence and not let it affect you personally. I had to learn to separate my self-worth from my casting results.

5. Common Mistakes New Models Should Avoid

One of the biggest mistakes I see new models make is thinking that modeling is only about being “pretty” or photogenic. That is a very limited understanding of the industry. Modeling is a professional job that requires discipline, preparation, and consistency.

Another mistake is having ego. In this industry, ego can close more doors than it opens. Being humble and open to learning is extremely important.

Many beginners also underestimate professionalism. Being late, unprepared, or difficult to work with can quickly affect your reputation. In modeling, your reputation is everything.

6. What Really Helps You Grow in This Industry

If I had to highlight what truly helped me grow, it would be consistency and attitude. Showing up, even when things are not perfect, makes a big difference over time.

Your personality plays a major role in your career. Being kind, respectful, and cooperative makes people enjoy working with you. And when clients enjoy working with you, they remember you for future projects.

I also learned the importance of staying grounded. The industry can sometimes feel overwhelming, but maintaining balance in your personal life helps you stay focused and confident.

7. Final Advice for Aspiring Models

If I could give one honest piece of advice to anyone entering the modeling industry today, it would be this: take yourself seriously, but don’t take rejection personally. Work on your attitude just as much as your portfolio. Be disciplined, stay consistent, and always treat people with respect. Opportunities come and go, but your reputation stays with you.

Most importantly, believe in your journey even when it feels slow. My own story started with a simple “yes,” and it taught me that sometimes the smallest moments can change your entire direction in life.
