What I’ve Learned About Modeling Agencies in Dubai — The Real Talk No One Gives You

W

hen I first stepped into the modeling world in Dubai, I didn’t really know how agencies worked — or who to trust. I’ve never signed exclusively with one, but I’m represented by several across the city. I couldn’t even tell you which one came first. Some I found through simple Google searches, others approached me, and a few came recommended by fellow models.

Looking back, I realize that’s how it goes for most of us here — you learn as you go. But over time, I’ve picked up lessons that every model in Dubai should know when it comes to agencies: the red flags, the green lights, and how to handle tricky situations without burning bridges.

Professionalism and Respect Start With Contracts

Sometimes you’ll come across contracts that just don’t feel right – vague wordings, unclear terms, or sections that leave you with more questions than answers. I’ve learned not to just skim and sign. I go through every line carefully and ask questions like: What does this clause actually mean? When does payment happen? Is there an exclusivity period?

In one case, when I raised a few questions, the response I got was surprisingly defensive – as if asking for clarity meant I was being difficult. I kept things respectful and explained I simply wanted to understand the terms before moving forward. Eventually they did come back with a revised version that made things much clearer.

It wasn’t the most comfortable exchange, but it was a good reminder that standing up for yourself is part of the job. Asking questions isn’t being difficult – it is being professional.

Transparency and Support Go a Long Way

There are agencies, though, that do step up — and those are the ones worth keeping around. A few weeks ago, I had a shoot that was supposed to be for one brand but turned out to be for two. And the payment? Way too low considering the extra exposure and usage.

I reached out to my agency straight away. They didn’t delay — they contacted the client directly, kept me updated throughout, and even showed me screenshots of the conversation. That kind of transparency builds trust. It made me feel like I had someone on my side who wasn’t just doing the job for commission, but genuinely cared about fairness.

Red Flags: When Agencies Don’t Play Fair

Unfortunately, not all agencies operate with that level of honesty. I’ve had situations where an agency told a client I was “unavailable” — when I was absolutely free — just so they could push one of their exclusive models instead. It’s frustrating, especially when the request for you came directly from the client.

Then there’s the issue of payment timelines. Some agencies operate on strict 60-day payment terms — and even then , they’ll add that processing may take a few extra days. I once waited 80 days for a payment. I asked if there was any way to shorten the timeline for future jobs – not expecting a major change, just hoping for a conversation. The response was a firm no.

It wasn’t just about the money – it was about the lack of flexibility and willingness to even discuss options. Moments like that make you realize how important it is to work with agencies that treat you like a partner, not just a name on a booking sheet.

Exclusivity, Career Growth, and the Power of Social Media

So, can the right agency really change your career? Yes — but it depends. If you’re signed exclusively, the agency is more likely to push you and prioritize your bookings. But if you’re not, you’re often treated as “optional.” That’s just the way it is.

Where I’ve seen real value is with agencies that help place you internationally — the kind that open up markets beyond your home base. Being able to work in multiple countries makes a huge difference in your growth.

That said, I think we all need to recognize that your own visibility matters more than ever. Building your social media presence is one of the best tools you have. I’ve gotten booked directly through Instagram — no agency involved. Clients are watching, and your online image is your portfolio now.

Final Thoughts: In Dubai, Experience Teaches More Than Research

If you’re just starting out, don’t get too obsessed with finding the “perfect” agency. Instead, focus on how the agency communicates with you, whether they’re transparent, how they respond when you ask for clarity, and how fairly they handle payments and contracts.

Do your research, yes — but more importantly, pay attention to how they act in real situations. Ask questions. Speak up. Read the fine print. And never ignore your gut.

In Dubai’s fast-moving, competitive modeling scene, the people who trust their own experience — and learn from every job — always end up ahead.

At the end of the day, you are your own brand. An agency can support your journey, but you’re the one who builds it.

For what it’s worth, I’ve worked with Paekar Modeling Agency — and things were smooth. Communication was clear, jobs came through as promised, and I had no surprises with payments or terms.
